What HenRules Does

HenRules is a free informational resource built to solve a specific problem: finding accurate, plain-language information about backyard chicken rules in U.S. cities is harder than it should be. The information exists โ€” in municipal codes, county ordinances, and state statutes โ€” but it's scattered, inconsistently formatted, and often buried in PDFs that haven't been updated in years.

HenRules collects that information, verifies it against original municipal code sources, and presents it in plain language โ€” explaining what the rules mean practically, not just what they say literally.

How We Verify Information

Every city and state page on HenRules is sourced from publicly available municipal codes. We cite the specific ordinance section on each page โ€” for example, "Denver Municipal Code Sec. 8-93" or "Texas Agriculture Code ยง251.007" โ€” so readers can verify the source directly. When laws change, we update the relevant pages and note the update date.

We also track state-level legislative changes. The Florida HB 1203 (2024) guide, the Missouri HB 2062 unconstitutionality ruling (2025), the Kentucky HB 276 (2026) guide, and the Texas HOA bills analysis are all examples of legislative tracking that goes beyond what most ordinance sites cover.

Our Editorial Standards

  • Source everything. Every page cites the specific municipal code section or statute it references. When we summarize a law, we link to or name the primary source.
  • Correct errors promptly. Ordinances change without notice. When a reader submits a verified correction with an official source, we update the page within days. Use the contact page for corrections.
  • Say what we don't know. We note when a city's rules are unclear, when a law is actively being contested, or when the situation has changed since last verification.
  • Never give legal advice. This site explains what ordinances say. It does not advise on specific legal situations. For permit appeals, HOA disputes, or enforcement actions, readers need a licensed local attorney.
